(Phoenix, Ariz.) - Junior forward Jordan Rideout scored two goals, including a penalty kick in the 88th minute to help UMKC to a 2-1 win on the road at Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon in men's soccer action.
Kansas City (2-5-4, 1-1-1 WAC) had its first good chance in the 13th minute when a Rideout header hit the crossbar. The 'Lopes (1-7-1, 0-2 WAC) controlled the play until then, but UMKC goalkeeper Chris McGaughey was up to the task, keeping a clean sheet with a couple saves.
The 'Roos got on the board first against the run of play in the 24th minute when Rideout hit a shot from outside the 18 yard box on a quick turn from the right side into the far post side of the net. It was assisted by sophomore Broc Cramer, who sent a long pass to Rideout.
The two squads were in a deadlock from there, with most of the play taking place in the midfield until the halftime clock was winding down. With five seconds left, GCU tried to hit a shot from 35 yards out, but it was deflected by a UMKC defender. Unfortunately for the 'Roos, the ball went right to Jose Rodriguez Nieblas in the box, and he hit a shot into the goal just before the buzzer sounded.
The second half was even for the most part, with both teams generating a couple good chances. The closest chance came in the 71st minute when Tom McCarthy flicked on a free kick header that hit off the post and bounced across the goal mouth.
In the 88th minute, freshman Clay Stewart made a run with the ball into the box on the right side, beating a GCU defender. He attempted to get past a second defender, but was fouled, and the referee called a penalty kick, converted by Rideout.
The goal was Rideout's 19th in his career, moving him into a tie for third all-time with Brendan Flanagan. It was also his fourth career two-goal game. Rideout now has a team-high five goals on the season.
The win snapped a five-game winless skid for the 'Roos, who went 1-0-1 on the weekend road trip in WAC play.
The 'Lopes took an 18-11 shot advantage on the day, with a 6-4 lead in shots on goal. McGaughey made five saves in the winning effort, while Rideout led the 'Roos with four shots.
UMKC will come home to host Air Force and Grand Canyon this Friday and Sunday, respectively.
