Senior Nicole Kerkman led the 'Roos in the match, finishing with a team-high 16 digs, while fellow senior Kelsey Knoche led the team with 10 kills to go along with nine digs.
In the first set, the 'Roos scored the first point of the match on a kill from Knoche, but South Dakota State reeled off seven straight points to build its lead to six. The Jacks then build their lead to as many as 13 before UMKC cut the lead to six at 18-12 after back-to-back kills from junior Emily Lucas. The comeback could not be completed though, as SDSU scored seven of the final nine points to take a 25-14 first set win.
The 'Roos again took an early one lead in the second set on a kill from sophomore Chloe Jarema, before a second Jarema kills pushed the lead to 4-2. The Jacks then notched six of the next seven points of the set to take their first lead at 8-5. South Dakota State would stretch the lead to as many as four, before a 5-1 run by UMKC, capped by an ace from Knoche, tied the set at 16. The rally though, would again fall short as a 9-4 run to end the set gave SDSU the 25-20 second set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Coming out of intermission, SDSU closed out the match with a 25-16 third set win. In the beginning, the 'Roos hung close, trailing by one 13 points into the set. The Jackrabbits then went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-6 lead before a 4-0 run later extended the lead to 17-10. The two teams would trade the next eight points, but South Dakota State scored four of the final six points for the match win.
In the match, senior Elizabeth Beck finished with seven kills, while Jarema, senior Christiana McQuin and Lucas each had six. Junior setters Ella Meier (18) and Brittney Robers (15), meanwhile, combined for 33 assists.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Wednesday when they visit future Summit League member Nebraska-Omaha for a 6:30 p.m. match in Omaha.
