
Oral Roberts Downs 'Roos In Three

(Kansas City, Mo.) - The UMKC volleyball team (5-6, 0-2) dropped its match on Saturday night, 3-0, to Oral Roberts (8-4, 1-1) in Tulsa, Okla. Leading the way for the 'Roos in the match was senior Kelsey Knoche, as the outside hitter finished with 12 kills, six digs and two blocks in the effort.
In the opening set, ORU went ahead in the match with a 25-21 win over the Kangaroos. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-3 lead through the first 11 points, but the 'Roos battled back to pull within one at 16-15. The two teams traded the next four points, but ORU closed the set on a 7-3 run for the win.
The Golden Eagles built their lead to 2-0 in the second set after downing the 'Roos, 25-17. UMKC took an early 1-0 lead, but ORU scored 10 of the next 14 points to build a 10-5 lead. The Kangaroos closed the gap to two at 14-12 on an ace from senior Christiana McQuin, but an 11-5 run by Oral Roberts ended the set.
Coming out of intermission, Oral Roberts closed out the match with a 25-13 win in the third set. UMKC hung close early, trailing by just two at 7-5. The 'Roos though managed only eight more points the rest of the set and dropped the match, 3-0.
For the Kangaroos, senior Nicole Kerkman had a team-high 23 digs, while junior Ella Meier led the squad with 15 assists.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again Monday when they welcome in South Dakota State to Kansas City for a 6:30 p.m. match at the Swinney Recreation Center.
