Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC softball team (20-12, 7-5) picked up a 5-0 win over Western Illinois (10-17, 7-5) on Saturday afternoon at Loyola Park behind the right arm of sophomore Deanna Friese (15-6). The Kennesaw, Ga., native took a no-hitter into the seventh before giving up her only hit of the game on a bunt single to the lead-off hitter.
The 'Roos opened the game with a pair of first inning runs to take an early 2-0 lead. Juniors Kelly Fischer and Anna Sokolik started the rally with back-to-back one out singles before a double steal put them on second and third. Sophomore Emily Ott then knocked in Fischer with an RBI groundout and Sokolik came around to score on a wild pitch.
UMKC then pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third when Sokolik's RBI single scored Fischer from second.
In the fourth, the Kangaroos added a pair of insurance runs when senior Lauren Rodrigues scored on a wild pitch and junior Ashley Whiteside crossed the plate on a single by junior Kaelene Curry.
Friese, meanwhile, dominated the Leatherneck hitters, as the UMKC starter struck out 10 batters in her third shutout and second one-hitter of the season.
At the plate, Sokolik went 3-for-3 with an RBI, a run and two stolen bases to lead the 'Roo offense, while Fischer was 1-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.
The Blue & Gold will return to action next weekend when they head to Shreveport, La., for a three game series with Summit League foe Centenary starting Saturday at 4 p.m.
