
'Roos Complete Sweep With 11-2 Win Over Centenary

Shreveport, La. -- The UMKC softball team (23-12, 10-5) completed the three-game sweep of Centenary (4-25, 2-13) with an 11-2 win in five innings on Sunday morning at the CC Softball Complex. The 'Roos out-hit the Ladies 11-4 in the game, as eight different players collected hits for UMKC.
Freshman Katie Henning led the offensive attack, finishing 1-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored, while sophomore Emily Ott went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, an RBI, a double, a walk and a stolen base.
The 'Roos continued to jump ahead of the Ladies early, putting up four first inning runs in the finale. Junior Kaelene Curry led-off the game with a single to short and immediately scored on junior Kelly Fischer's RBI double to left. Fellow junior Anna Sokolik then singled in Fischer before coming around to score on Ott's double down the left field line. After stealing third, Ott then scored on Henning's fielder's choice for the final run of the inning.
Two innings later, UMKC pushed the lead to 5-0 when sophomore Lindsey Davis doubled down the left field line to plate Ott from second.
After a pair of runs by the Ladies in the fourth cut the lead to 5-2, the 'Roos put the game away with a six-run fifth.
Sokolik opened the inning by reaching first after getting hit by a pitch before back-to-back singles by Ott and junior Megan Ussary loaded the bases for Henning. The freshman would come through for the 'Roos with a bases clearing single to push the lead to 8-2. Junior Danielle Bennefeld followed by reaching on a Centenary error with Henning scoring on the play. After stealing third, Bennefeld crossed the plate on a single by senior Lauren Rodrigues. Two batters later, Curry would single up the middle to score a pinch-running Megan Vicino for the 'Roos' final run.
In the bottom half of the inning, Centenary loaded the bases but UMKC reliever Katie Franks would get the final two Lady hitters to fly out to end the game.
In the game, UMKC starter Deanna Friese tossed three perfect innings to open the game, striking out six Ladies during the stretch and improving her record to 17-6 on the season. At the plate, Curry and Fischer each recorded two hits, scored a run and collected an RBI, while Sokolik went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Tuesday when they head to Springfield, Mo. to take on instate rival Missouri State in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
