
'Roos Sweep Doubleheader With UW-Parkside

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC softball team (17-10) swept its doubleheader with Wisconsin-Parkside (6-14) on Monday afternoon at Loyola Park on the campus of Rockhurst University. In the opening game, the 'Roos downed the Rangers, 6-3 before dismissing them 7-3 in the late game.
Sophomore Emily Ott (2-1) led the 'Roos, tossing a complete game, seven hitter with nine strikeouts in the opener, while finishing the day 3-for-5 with a team-high three RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases. Junior Anna Sokolik (1-0) picked up the win in game two, throwing a complete game, seven hitter with three strikeouts, while going 2-for-5 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run on her birthday.
In the opener, the Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of first inning runs, but the 'Roos answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Kaelene Curry got the scoring started, crossing the plate on junior Megan Ussary's RBI single, while Sokolik came around to score when Ott knocked her in from third.
Two innings later, UW-Parkside went back in front 3-2, but a three-run fourth from UMKC put them on top for good. Junior Danielle Bennefeld came up with the big hit for the 'Roos in the inning when she belted a two-run, two-out double down the left field line that drove in senior Amanda Kinn and Ott. Bennefeld then came around to score on an error by the Ranger shortstop.
UMKC added their final run in the fifth when Ott's RBI double knocked in Sokolik, pushing the lead to the 6-3 final.
In game two, it was the 'Roos turn to take the early lead, going ahead 2-0 after the first when Sokolik's two-run singled scored Curry and junior Kelly Fischer.
After a three-run inning by the Rangers in the top of the fourth, the 'Roos would go back in front for good with a three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ussary walked and Ott singled to lead-off the inning and two batters later, Kinn smashed a two-run, two-out double to right center that scored both Ussary and Ott. The next UMKC batter, junior Ashley Whiteside, then singled to knock in Kinn.
The 'Roos would add a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when Fischer scored on Ussary's RBI triple and Ussary scored on Ott's sacrifice fly.
On the day, Ussary went 4-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs, a triple, a walk and a stolen base, while Kinn was 3-for-6 with two runs, two RBIs and two doubles.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Wednesday when they host a doubleheader with Kansas at Loyola Park starting at 4 p.m.
