Orlando, Fla. -- The UMKC softball team (9-5) dropped its final game at the UCF/Courtyard by Marriott Invitational II, 1-0 to the Big East's Vilanova (5-5) on Sunday morning at the UCF Softball Complex. The 'Roos out-hit the Wildcats in the contest, 4-3, but could not push any of their base runners across.
Junior Kaelene Curry led the 'Roos offensively with two hits, while junior Kelly Fischer and senior Lauren Rodrigues finished with one hit apiece.
Villanova scored the game's lone run in the first after a pair of walks from UMKC starter Katie Franks (1-1) followed by a passed ball and a wild pitch.
UMKC then went 1-2-3 in the first, before Megan Ussary led-off the second inning with a walk. Emily Ott then moved the 'Roos' third baseman to second with a sacrifice bunt, but UMKC could not get the run across.
The Kangaroos again threatened the following inning, when, with one out, Ashley Whiteside, Curry and Kelly Fischer all successfully reached on bunts to load the bases. Again though, the 'Roos could not convert the run, leaving three runners stranded.
UMKC would threaten just once more in the sixth when Curry singled and stole second before falling 1-0.
In relief, Deanna Friese tossed 6.1 innings, allowing three hits, while striking out five.
In the game, the 'Roos left six runners on base, while Villanova stranded five.
UMKC will back in action again starting next Friday at the Saint Louis Breast Cancer Tournament.
