Orlando, Fla. -- The UMKC softball team (9-4) split its game on Saturday at the UCF/Courtyard by Marriott Invitational I, downing UNF (5-9), 5-3 in the opener before falling 4-1 to No. 9 Michigan (13-0) in the afternoon contest.
Against UNF, the top three in the UMKC lineup came through for the 'Roos in a big way, as Kaelene Curry, Anna Sokolik and Kelly Fischer combined to go 5-for-6 with five walks, four runs scored and three RBIs.
In the first inning, UMKC gained the early advantage when Curry came across the plate courtesy of a Osprey error on a Megan Ussary pop up. Emily Ott then followed up with an RBI single that knocked in Fischer and put UMKC up 2-0 after one.
North Florida would tie the game 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but two innings later the Kangaroos would retake the lead with two runs of their own.
In the inning, Fischer's RBI single scored Ashley Whiteside after the center fielder had walked to lead off the inning. Curry then came around to score on Sokolik's single up the middle, pushing the lead to 4-2.
UMKC would add an insurance run in the sixth on Sokolik's RBI triple that scored Curry for the third time in the game.
UNF then cut the lead to 5-3 with a single run in the seventh, but 'Roo starter Deanna Friese picked up her seventh win of the season when she got the final Osprey hitter to fly out to left to wrap-up the contest.
At the plate, Whiteside finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a run, while Ott was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Friese, meanwhile, tossed all seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out six.
In the game with Michigan, the Wolverines opened up the scoring with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first.
Two innings later, Michigan extended its lead to 4-0, but the 'Roos would not quietly, as Curry opened the top of the fourth with a lead-off single for the squad's first base runner of the game.
After each team was held scoreless in the fifth, the 'Roos broke through with a single run in the sixth.
In the inning, Danielle Bennefeld led off with a walk and moved to second on Whiteside's sacrifice bunt. Curry then collected her second hit of the game with a base hit up the middle scoring Bennefeld.
UMKC would get no closer though, and Michigan would hold on for the 4-1 win.
In the game, Deanna Friese (7-3) threw all six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with three strike outs.
The Blue & Gold will wrap-up play at the event tomorrow when they face Villanova at 8 a.m.
