Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC softball team (19-24, 9-8) won its 10th game in 11 tries when its swept its doubleheader with Centenary (9-29, 3-14) on Saturday at Avila University. The 'Roos were led on the day by the pitching duo of Anna Sokolik and Deanna Friese, as the pair combine for two complete games, a 0.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts.
In game one, the Ladies took the first lead of the game on an unearned run in the top of the second off UMKC starter Sokolik.
The 'Roos, however, would not get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth, after hitting the ball hard, but right at the Lady defenders. In the inning, the squad loaded the bases for Taylor Hill, when the freshman's groundball to the Centenary shortstop scored Kelly Fischer to tie the game at one.
In the seventh, the 'Roos would notch the winning run to take game one of the series. Freshman Lindsey Davis led the inning off with a double, before being pinch ran for by Rhiannon Mendez. The next two batters in the UMKC lineup would fail to advance Mendez, bringing Fischer to the plate with two outs. The sophomore would come through, as her ground ball to the shortstop was thrown away, allowing Mendez to cross the plate with the winning run.
In the game, Sokolik tossed all seven innings, allowing no earned runs, while Curry and Davis each notched two hits.
In game two, the 'Roos took the early lead, getting two runs in the bottom of the second on Chelsea Hartwig's two-run blast to center that scored Danielle Bennefeld and gave UMKC the 2-0 lead.
Centenary would cut the lead to one on Bonnie Matak's solo home run off Friese, but the 'Roos would add three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.
In the fifth, Fischer and Sokolik produced back-to-back singles, before Fischer scored on Hill's single that pushed the lead to 3-1. Megan Vicino then drove the ball to left center for a two-run double, scoring Sokolik and Hill.
The five runs would be more than enough for Friese, as the freshman finished with 10 strikeouts, while allowing only one earned run, while the squad would turn three double plays on the day.
The two teams will wrap-up the series tomorrow with game three at 12 p.m.
