Columbia, Mo. -- The UMKC softball team (3-13) dropped a pair of games on Sunday in the Missouri Breast Cancer Tournament, falling 9-3 to Missouri and 3-0 to Missouri State. Emily Ott led the 'Roos on the day, as the freshman finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs in the two contests.
In the first game, the Tigers took an early 5-0 lead, tallying one run in the first and four the second. The 'Roos would not go quietly though, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to two.
Danielle Bennefeld led off the inning by reaching base after getting hit by a pitch, while right fielder Anna Sokolik followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Lead-off batter Kaelene Curry reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, and after a Kelly Fischer strikeout, Ott doubled off the right field fence to knock in Bennefeld and Sokolik. Left fielder, Megan Vicino then followed with a sacrifice fly to score Curry and move the score to 5-3.
Mizzou would tack on four more runs in the sixth to push the lead to six, before the 'Roos attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the inning. UMKC loaded the bases with one out, as Ott, Chelsea Hartwig and Lauren Rodrigues all reached in the inning, but a pop out and a strike out ended the rally.
Hartwig and Sokolik each notched hits for the squad in the loss, while Taya Upkes tossed 2.2 innings in relief, allowing two hits and no runs.
In the second game, UMKC fell 3-0 to the Bears to close out the tournament.
The 'Roos threatened in the first, getting a lead-off single from Curry and a two-out walk from Hartwig but were unable to push across any runs.
MSU then struck first in the third inning, getting to UMKC starter Sokolik and taking a 3-0 lead in the game.
UMKC again put two runners on in the fourth. This time getting a lead-off single from Ott, and after a Hartwig sacrifice bunt, a walk from Amanda Kinn put runners on first and second. MSU again stopped the rally, inducing a foul out and a ground out to first to end the inning.
The 'Roos had one last chance to cut into the MSU lead in the seventh when Brittany Rich recorded a one-out double, but a double play would end the threat and the game.
On the mound, Sokolik finished with a complete game, allowing one earned run, while striking out six. For the tournament, the sophomore tossed 13 innings, allowing 11 hits and two earned runs, while striking out 10.
UMKC will be in action again on Wednesday when it welcomes in Wichita State for a double header in the home opener.
