Tulsa, Okla. -- The UMKC softball team (2-9) fell, 9-4, to Creighton on Saturday morning in the Tulsa Embassy Suites Invitational at the Hardesty Complex on the campus of the University of Tulsa. The 'Roos were led by catchers Lindsey Davis and Lauren Rodrigues, as the duo combined to go 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Creighton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off starting pitcher Taya Upkes. UMKC would battle back though as it tied the game at three in the bottom of the second. Upkes would then settle in and hold the Blue Jays scoreless over the next two innings.
In the second, Anna Sokolik started the UMKC rally off with a walk and would later come around to score on Davis' RBI single. Ashley Whiteside followed up Davis' single by reaching base on a hit by a pitch, and both would cross the plate on lead-off batter Kaelene Curry's single.
The score would stay tied until the top of the fourth when Creighton notched two runs to take a 5-3 lead, while adding four more in the seventh to push the lead to 9-3.
Lauren Rodrigues' solo home run in the bottom of the seventh cut the lead to 9-4, but the next three 'Roo batter went down in order to end the game.
For the squad, Curry, Kelly Fischer and Emily Ott all registered hits, while Upkes took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits with one strike out in 3.2 innings of work. Ott added 3.1 innings in relief, giving up two earned runs and striking out three.
UMKC will close out their trip to Tulsa on Sunday at noon when they face Eastern Illinois.
