Tulsa, Okla. -- The UMKC softball team fell 4-2 to Texas State in the opener of the Tulsa Embassy Suites Invitational on Friday. Shortstop Kaelene Curry led the 'Roo attack, as the sophomore reached base in all three of her plate appearance registering a double, a single and a walk for the squad.
The 'Roos fell behind early in the contest, giving up single runs to the Bobcats in the first and second innings, before starter Deanna Friese settled in and kept the score at 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Texas State increased its lead to 4-0.
UMKC would not go quietly though, as the squad cut the lead in half with two sixth inning runs. Curry started the rally with a long double that bounced off the bottom of the right field fence and later scored on an RBI double by second baseman Kelly Fischer. An RBI single by Ott scored Fischer to cut the led to 4-2, but Texas State pitcher, Chandler Hall retired the next five 'Roos to end the rally and the game.
For the 'Roos, the top third of the order did all the damage, accounting for the squad's four hits, five base runners, two RBIs and two runs. Friese, meanwhile, went all six innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out two.
UMKC will be in action again later tonight when they face host Tulsa at 6 p.m.
