Lubbock, Texas -- The UMKC softball (2-6) team dropped the final game of the Texas Tech Tournament to the host Red Raiders, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field. Ashley Whiteside led the 'Roos in the contest finishing with two hits and two runs in the loss.
The 'Roos struck first in the game when Kaelene Curry singled in the top of the first inning, advanced to second on a Kelly Fischer sacrifice, moved to third on a passed ball and scored when an error was committed on a Chelsea Hartwig ground ball.
The lead was short-lived though, as Texas Tech notched a one-run single and a two-run single in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the 'Roos cut the lead to one in the top of the third inning when Ashley Whiteside scored on a Red Raider error during a Fischer single, but Texas Tech would again extend its lead to two when Emily Bledsoe scored after a Taya Upkes error.
The 'Roos would go scoreless for the next three innings, while Texas Tech pushed the lead to 7-2 with three runs in the fifth.
In the final inning, UMKC would attempt to mount a comeback as Ashley Whiteside singled and later scored on a Curry double cutting the lead to 7-3. The Red Raiders would retire the next three 'Roos though to end the rally and take the victory.
Curry finished with two hits, an RBI and a run for the 'Roos, while Fischer added a pair of hits. On the mound, Upkes went 2.1 innings, allowing no earned runs, while Anna Sokolik added an inning of work with no runs allowed. Deanna Friese (2-4) took the loss for the squad, allowing three runs in two innings of work, striking out two.
The Blue and Gold will be back in action next weekend when they head to Oklahoma for five games in the Tulsa Embassy Suites Invitational.
