
'Roos Go 1-1 On Second Day Of Texas Tech Tournament

Lubbock, Texas -- The UMKC softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Texas Tech Tournament, downing Maine, 7-6 in the morning contest and falling to Texas Tech, 5-4, in eight innings in the afternoon tilt. Kaelene Curry led the squad on the day, as the sophomore shortstop reached base six times, driving in four runs and scoring three more.
In the first game against Maine, the 'Roos fell behind early, giving up a first inning run to the Black Bears when Whitney Spangle scored on a passed ball.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as UMKC put four runs on the board in the top of the second inning. Megan Vicino started the inning off with a double and would later score on a wild pitch. A Curry RBI double, scoring Ashley Whiteside, increased the lead to 2-1, while Curry would later score on a passed ball. Chelsea Hartwig's RBI double drove in Kelly Fischer from second to give the 'Roos a 4-1 lead heading to the bottom of the second.
UMKC would tack on two more runs in the top of the fourth when a Curry single scored Whiteside and an Emily Ott single scored Curry.
Maine would tighten up the score in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own, but the Kangaroos would answer with a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Ott to push the lead to 7-3.
Maine would try to mount a comeback with two runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh to pull within one, but freshman Deanna Friese struck out Kristen Calvetti to end the game.
Fischer, Whiteside, and Curry all scored two runs for the squad, while Ott and Curry each notched two RBIs. On the mound, Deanna Friese threw a complete game with nine strikeouts to even her record at 2-2 on the season.
In the second game of the day, against Texas Tech, Carli Slagle paced the squad in the loss notching the team's first home run of the year.
The 'Roos fell behind early in the contest, giving up a first inning run to the Red Raiders.
UMKC would quickly answer though, evening the score in the top of the second when Anna Sokolik scored after Curry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The score would remain tied at one until the sixth inning when each team would add two runs. The 'Roos registered their runs on a Curry RBI double scoring Rhiannon Mendez and a Danielle Bennefeld RBI single scoring Curry.
UMKC then regained the lead in the top of the seventh when Slagle belted her solo home run, but Texas Tech would again answer with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
In the eighth after the 'Roos went scoreless in the top half of the inning, the Red Raiders ended the game on an RBI double.
Curry led the team in the contest with two RBIs, while Bennefeld and Vicino each notched two hits. Sokolik went 5.2 innings for the 'Roos on the mound, allowing three runs while Friese took the loss for the squad.
The Blue and Gold will wrap up its trip to Lubbock on Sunday when they take on Texas Tech at noon.
