Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC men's soccer team claimed The Summit League regular season title courtesy of its 1-0 shutout victory over IUPUI on Saturday afternoon at Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field. Junior Jimmy Simon netted his team-leading seventh goal in the 84th minute, and Ken Cooper posted his eighth shutout to lead the 'Roos to their 10th victory of the season.
UMKC controlled the action in the first half, out shooting the Jaguars by an 11-1 margin. The 'Roos, however, couldn't capitalize on their opportunities, as they headed into the locker room deadlocked at zero.
The 'Roos maintained control in the second half before eventually netting the game-winning goal in the 84th minute. Simon scored on a give-and-go with sophomore David Sarabia. After receiving the pass from Sarabia, Simon fired his shot into the upper left corner of the net for his team-leading seventh strike of the season.
Cooper made a single save en route to his eighth shutout, which is a new UMKC single season record. The victory is also Cooper's 31st career win in Blue and Gold, tying him with Beau Williams for the most victories in the record books.
The victory is also one for the record books for head coach Rick Benben, as it is the 100th win of his UMKC career. It also clinches the regular season title - the fourth in school history - and earns the squad the No. 1 seed at The Summit League Tournament.
UMKC (10-4-2, 4-0-1) will close out the regular season next Saturday at Western Illinois.
