Men's Tennis Closes Out League Play With A 6-1 Win Over Centenary

Fort Wayne, Ind. -- The UMKC men's tennis team closed out play at The Summit League Cluster with a 6-1 win over Centenary on Friday night in Fort Wayne. The Kangaroos claimed the doubles point before winning five-of-six singles matches to win their 11th match of the season.
UMKC opened the evening by sweeping all three of the doubles matches to take the doubles point. Nick Hays and Gustavo Guerin opened with an 8-1 win at the three line over John Reeks and Matt Shoptaugh before Dennis Schwarz and Erwin Quintanilla secured an 8-3 win at the No. 2 position over Jules Bourgon and Seva Kostelanetz. The 'Roos then completed the sweep when Patrick Smith and Serge Ristivojevic topped Evan Magill and Jacob Dawson by the score of 8-4.
Once the action turned to singles, all six matches were decided in straight sets. Smith had the most convincing win of the match with his 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bourgon at the one line. It was Smith's first victory at the No. 1 position this season and his team-leading 11th win on the year.
The Kangaroos also posted convincing victories at the two, three, five and six positions. Guerin knocked off Magill at the two line, 6-2, 6-1, before Ristivojevic topped Dawson, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 3 position. Quintanilla upended Kostelanetz, 6-0, 6-3, at the five line and Hays topped Reeks by the scores of 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Gents picked up their lone point of the match at the five line when Shoptaugh topped Schwarz, 7-5, 6-1.
UMKC (11-6, 5-1) will close out the regular season with a home match against Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday afternoon. The match will be held at the Plaza Tennis Center beginning at 2 p.m.
