
Softball Defeats Houston Baptist, Faces Tennessee-Martin Tomorrow

Arlington, Texas -- The Kangaroos wrapped up day two at the UT-Arlington Tournament on Saturday night, going 1-1. UMKC is now 4-9 on the season with a 10-2 win over Houston Baptist. The Kangaroos fell earlier in the day to Texas Southern, 6-5.

Kelly Fischer led UMKC at the plate with two runs and two RBIs in the loss to the Tigers. On the mound for UMKC was Anna Sokolik and Samantha Hurst. Sokolik threw one inning and gave up three runs off of three hits and Hurst pitched five innings, giving up three runs off of four hits, while recording 11 strike outs.
The Kangaroos jumped on the scoreboard first, with Ashley Whiteside scoring to give UMKC a 1-0 lead. Whiteside hit a fielder's choice and moved to second off of a Fischer sacrifice bunt. She then moved to third and scored off of back-to-back wild pitches.
UMKC wouldn't hold the lead for long, as Texas Southern scored three runs off of two hits with two outs to take a 3-1 lead after the first.
The Kangaroos had a big second inning with Carli Slagle posting a double and Danielle Bennefeld hitting a triple to score Slagle. UMKC would only drive in one run in the second inning, before tying things up in the third courtesy of a Fischer run.
UMKC then grabbed a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning, with Bennefeld and Vicino scoring.
Texas Southern then used a three-run sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead before holding the 'Roos scoreless in the bottom of the inning to win the contest.

The Kangaroos got the bats going in the first, scoring six runs off of six hits. Hartwig connected on a three-run home run to start the scoring in the inning before Betsy Hanley, Kaelene Curry and Bennefeld all crossed the plate to give UMKC the 6-0 lead.
UMKC then stretched its lead to 10-0 in the third inning before Houston Baptist tallied a run in both the third and fifth innings to make the score 10-2.
Nicholle Ellis recorded the win for the Kangaroos, throwing four innings and allowing just one run off of four hits.
The Kangaroos will wrap up play in the UT-Arlington Tournament tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. against Tennessee-Martin.
