
Kangaroos Go 1-1 In Day One Of UT-Arlington Invitational

Arlington, Texas ? UMKC is now 3-8 on the season following a pair of games at the UT-Arlington Tournament. The Kangaroos defeated Texas Southern 3-0 in game one of the tournament before falling to host-school UTA in their second game of the day, 2-1. Kaelene Curry went four-for-four in day one, scoring one run off of four hits. She hit one double, recorded one RBI and stole two bases.
UMKC 3 ? Texas Southern 0
The Kangaroos were led by Amanda Evans and Curry in their 3-0 win over the Tigers on Friday morning. Evans posted three hits and had one RBI, while Curry scored one run off of three hits and recorded one RBI.
In the top of the second, Carli Slagle led off with a single to the shortstop and moved to second on an Amanda Kinn bunt. Curry's first hit of the day brought Slagle home to put the `Roos up 1-0.
The UMKC bats would stay quiet until the fifth when Curry and Ashley Whiteside would both score. Curry singled and stolel second before Whiteside landed on base with a fielder's choice. Evans then drove in both runners before being picked off at first.
The Kangaroos defense, led by pitcher Nicholle Ellis, was able to hold Texas Southern scoreless to hang on for the shutout. Ellis threw a complete game and gave up six hits while tying her career-high with eight strikeouts.
UTA 2 ? UMKC 1
UMKC scored first but couldn't keep the UTA bats quiet and dropped a 2-1 decision. The Kangaroos scored their lone run of the game in the top of the second. Whiteside hit a fielder's choice, moved to third off of a single by Kelly Fischer and scored as a result of a Maverick error.
UTA also struck in the third inning, scoring two runs off of two hits.
The Mavericks were able to stop the UMKC offense, as the Kangaroos would leave runners stranded on base in the second and fifth innings.
On the mound for UMKC was Samantha Hurst, who despite the loss struck out five batters. Hurst pitched six innings and allowed two runs on five hits, while walking one.
UMKC will continue play in the UT-Arlington Tournament with two games tomorrow. The Kangaroos will play Tennessee-Martin first at 10:00 a.m. and then face Texas Southern again at 3:00 p.m.
