Kansas City, Mo. -- Head Coach Shameika McField announced today that Clif Mitchell has joined the UMKC track and field/cross country program as an assistant coach. Mitchell, who will work with the distance runners for the Kangaroos, joins the staff after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Kansas.
“I am very excited to have Clif join the track and field program as the cross country/distance coach,” said McField. “I had the pleasure of getting to know Clif as an athlete while at Tulsa and Kansas, and since then, he has impressed me with his knowledge level and commitment to being a student of the sport.”
While at KU, Mitchell assisted head coach Stanley Redwine with the day-to-day operations with the Jayhawk track and field programs. He also was a graduate assistant for the Kansas Relays Meet Director, where he was responsible for several aspects for the nationally-known relays.
As a student-athlete, Mitchell competed for three years at the University of Tulsa before rounding out his career at KU. With the Golden Hurricane, Mitchell was a two-time WAC all-conference selection in the 800-meter run and a three-time bronze medalist as a member of the 4x400-meter relay. He also was the UT recordholder in the 600-yard run, and the 800-meter champion at the Missouri Relays.
Upon graduation from Tulsa, Mitchell closed out his eligibility at KU in 2007. During the indoor season, Mitchell was a Big 12 all-conference selection in the 600-yard run.
As a prep, Mitchell was a Track and Field News High School all-American in the 4x400-meter relay in 2001, and he was a part of the 4x400-meter relay that set a Oklahoma state meet record. The two-time state champion (4x400; 4x800) was also the Texas Relays Champion in the 4x800-meter relay in 2002. Additionally, Mitchell was a member of the cross country state championship team at Edmond Memorial High School in 2000.
Mitchell, who is a USATF Level 1 certified coach, earned his bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science from the University of Tulsa in 2006. He is scheduled to receive his master's degree in exercise and sports science from the University of Kansas in May 2008.
