SHREVEPORT, LA.--Despite a hard fought match, the UMKC men's soccer team couldn't prevail over Summit League foe Centenary and dropped a 2-1 decision in double overtime. The Kangaroos fall to 9-5-2 on the year and 3-2 in league play, while Centenary improves to 4-8-1 overall and 2-4 in the Summit League.
A 0-0 score at halftime seemed unlikely considering UMKC dominated the first half of play. The Kangaroos outshot Centenary 12-6 in the first half alone.
But it was Centenary who would strike first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second half. In the 78th minute Connor Adams would propel his team ahead off a pass from John McHugh. Adams received the pass from McHugh and found himself one-on-one with Kangaroo goalkeeper Ken Cooper, resulting in a goal.
UMKC wouldn't stay down for long with Bryan Perez finding the back of the net for the ninth time this season. Miguel Rodrigues initiated the play with a corner kick and located Perez in the box resulting in a goal in the 81st minute.
Neither team could capitalize on goal scoring opportunities in the rest of regulation, sending the game into overtime. The first overtime period went by relatively quickly, with both teams coming up short. It wasn't until the second overtime period that Centenary was able to find a hole in the UMKC defense to come out on top.
Aaron Bergman took a pass from Tate McIntyre and Cooper again found himself in a one-on-one situation. Bergman was able to squeeze the ball past Cooper and clinch the victory for his team in the 103rd minute.
Despite the loss, UMKC outshot Centenary 22-14, placing seven of those shots on goal. Cooper recorded seven saves on the day, while Centenary goalkeeper Rennie Walker logged six. In addition to scoring the lone goal for the Kangaroos, Perez took seven shots with three of them on frame.
UMKC is next in action Sat., Nov. 8 at 12:00 p.m. at Oakland for their last regular season league game of the season.
