Rochester, Mich. -- Levi Coleman struck for his third goal of the season in the 29th minute, but the UMKC men's soccer team couldn't survive a late goal from Oakland, falling 2-1 in the regular season finale on Saturday.
The Golden Grizzlies put together the first chance of the afternoon, but Ken Cooper was able to make the save on the Stefan St. Louis effort in the 10th minute.
Sean Butler's effort in the 29th minute set up the first Kangaroo goal, as his shot was turned away by Steve Clark for a UMKC corner kick. The driven ball from John Bayron Sosa found its way into a large crowd in the middle of the penalty area, with Levi Coleman blasting the ball into the net for a 1-0 Kangaroo lead.
The lead would be short-lived, as Oakland was able to equalize in the 33rd minute, as Tom Catalano forced a turnover and put the ball past Cooper.
Coming out of the break, the Kangaroos earned a pair of corners in the 48th minute but couldn't capitalize. Caleb Mitchell's header in the 53rd minute was also just off the mark, ringing off the crossbar after eluding Clark.
Oakland mustered a pair of chances in the 63rd and 83rd minutes, with Cooper able to keep both chances out of the net.
Sosa managed a solid chance for the Blue-and-Gold in the 81st minute but couldn't beat Clark.
In the 89th minute, a hard shot by Catalano was stopped by Cooper, but the Kangaroo goalkeeper was only able to parry the initial shot with Catalano poking in the rebound for the final margin.
The Kangaroos close out the regular season with a 9-6-2 record and a 3-3 mark in league play. UMKC enters The Summit League Championships as the #3 seed and will take on Western Illinois in the semifinals on Friday. The game is set for a 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT) kickoff from the OU Soccer Field, and is the second game of the day. Hosts and #1 seed Oakland will take on IUPUI in the first game of the day.
