Kansas City, Mo. - Kandi Krebs has joined the UMKC softball coaching staff as an assistant coach, head coach Meredith Smith announced today. Krebs will be primarily responsible for working with the pitchers and catchers for the Kangaroos.
"I'm excited to bring Kandi on board as an assistant coach," said Smith. "She has a great deal of experience for this position and I expect her to be a great asset as we build this program into a success in The Summit League."
A native of Overland Park, Kan., Krebs has extensive experience as a pitching coach at the college level. She comes to UMKC following a year at UNC-Pembroke, a member of the Peach Belt Conference. The Braves finished the 2005-06 season with a 23-32 overall record despite losing two starting pitchers among a total of five season-ending injuries.
Prior to her stint at UNC-Pembroke, Krebs served as pitching coach at Mississippi Valley State. She helped the Devilettes to a 34-31 overall record during the 2004-05 season and the team's second consecutive SWAC title. She placed two pitchers and two catchers on all-SWAC teams following the season, with Jalena Brown earning SWAC Pitcher of the Year and Tournament MVP honors.
She made her collegiate coaching debut in 2002 as a pitching coach for Summit League member school Centenary, before serving as a graduate assistant at Prairie View A&M from 2002-04.
For her collegiate playing career, Krebs spent one season each at Independence (Kan.) CC and Coffeyville (Kan.) CC before transferring to Emporia State University. A shoulder injury ended her playing career early, but she continued to be involved as an athletic trainer for the team, as well as serving as an assistant coach at Lyndon (Kan.) HS.
She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion with a minor in Athletic Training from Emporia State in 2001.
As a prep, Krebs was a four-year letterwinner at Shawnee Mission North High School, earning all-Sunflower League honors as a senior as well as being named team captain.
