Kansas City, Mo. - The UMKC volleyball team dropped a three game match to Summit League foe South Dakota State on Friday night at the Swinney Recreation Center. The Kangaroos dropped the match to the Jackrabbits by the score of 19-30, 14-30 and 24-30. In the defeat, redshirt junior Mandy Tipton recorded her 1,000th career dig in Blue and Gold.
UMKC opened the match strong by staying neck and neck with South Dakota State, as the score was tied at seven all through 14 points. After trading four straight tallies, an SDSU attack error and a Kelly Gettinger kill gave the Kangaroos the 11-9 lead, but the Jackrabbits then scored five straight points to go up 14-11. UMKC wouldn't buckle, however, as it fought back to within a point at 17-16 behind kills by Jamie Hagerman and Danni Sperry. SDSU, however, then got on a hot streak, as it reeled off 13-of-16 points to claim the game, 30-19.
The Jackrabbits opened the second game on a 10-5 run and they proceeded to take a 16-9 lead. The Kangaroos cut their deficit to five points on three occasions, but with the score 19-14, SDSU scored the final 11 points to claim the game, 30-14.
After the break, kills by Caitlin Koenig and Sarah Johnson helped UMKC to the 4-1 lead in the third game before SDSU reeled off six straight points to go up 7-4. The Kangaroos continued battling in the game, as they stayed within striking distance with the score 13-11 in SDSU's favor. The Jackrabbits, however, rattled off six of seven points to go up 19-12 before extending their lead to nine points at 22-13. With the score 25-15, UMKC used kills by Hagerman, Sperry and Johnson to climb to within six at 27-21, but SDSU's lead was too large to overcome, as it went on to the 30-24 win.
UMKC finished with 38 kills and a .120 hitting percentage, while the Jackrabbits had 49 kills and a .281 hitting clip. The Kangaroos also had 33 assists, 44 digs and seven blocks in the match.
