Brett Schneider is in his second season as the associate head coach for the UMKC women’s basketball program. In addition to being the associate head coach, Schneider serves as the recruiting coordinator and camp director for the Kangaroos. He is also the liaison between the basketball program and the UMKC strength and conditioning program, while also organizing scouting reports and specializing in the development of post players.
Schneider came to Kansas City with 15 years of coaching experience with his most recent stop coming at Sam Houston State, where he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2006-07 season.
Before moving to Huntsville, Schneider served as an assistant coach at West Texas A&M University from 1993-98 and as an the associate head coach for the Buffs from 2000 to 2006. During his time in Canyon, West Texas A&M compiled a 248-76 overall record and it made six NCAA Division II tournament appearances.
Schneider coached numerous conference, regional and national award winners at West Texas A&M. He coached a total of five all-America selections, a National Freshman of the Year honoree, two Lone Star Conference Most Valuable Players, four LSC Freshman of the Year players, four LSC Defensive Most Valuable Player selections and four Academic all-Americans.
In between his stints with the Buffs, Schneider spent two years as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri from 1998 to 2000. During his time in Columbia, the Tigers compiled a 31-17 overall record. He also helped lead MU to its first postseason victory since 1985 and to its first Big 12 tournament victory in the program’s history.
At Missouri, Schneider was a very strong recruiter, as he signed the No. 21 ranked class in the nation in 1998-99. This included the No. 1 ranked junior college forward and the No. 7 ranked shooting guard. One of his recruits was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and two of his players were later drafted in the WNBA.
Schneider made a name for himself as a recruiter during his first stop at West Texas A&M. Over a four-year period, he signed a total of 14 players who were offered Division I scholarships. He inked a total of 13 all-state players from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kansas, Arizona and Illinois and he signed one Junior College Kodak all-American and a Texas High School Player of the Year honoree. In addition, he was successful internationally, signing a Bratislava, Slovakia, native.
Schneider has a strong family background in basketball. His father, Bob, coached for 43 years including 25 seasons at West Texas. He totaled 1,045 victories during his career, which included stops at three high schools and Texas Woman’s University. His brother, Brandon, coaches women’s basketball at Emporia State and his sister, Brooke, was a letterwinner at West Texas.
Brett, meanwhile, played one season at Trinidad Junior College before transferring to West Texas A&M. He earned his bachelor of science degree in 1997 and his master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2002. He was also an honorable mention all-state selection at Canyon High School in Canyon, Texas.
