Liz Sowers joined the UMKC basketball program in the Summer of 2010 and currently serves as the graduate assistant coach for the 'Roos, where she handles film exchange and the team's equipment, while also serving as the team's graphic designer for marketing and recruiting purposes.
"Liz is very talented graphically and does all of our graphic design in recruiting and for our locker room and players," UMKC Head Coach Candace Whitaker said. "After playing collegiately at Oakland, she understands college athletics and Division I and Summit League basketball. Being closer to the players age helps her to be a sounding board for our student-athletes as well."
Prior to joining the 'Roos, Sowers spent two seasons on fellow Summit League member Oakland's basketball team where she helped the Golden Grizzlies to a pair of league championships. Before heading to Rochester, Mich., Sowers was a member of the Hesston College basketball program, where she set a school record for points per game (45), points in a season and points in a career, while being named a NJCAA all-American.
Off the court, Sowers is a wide receiver on the Kansas City Tribe women's tackle football team where she led the nation (more than 70 teams) with 987 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. Prior to joining the Tribe, Sowers was a member of the West Michigan Mayhem in Kalamazoo, Mich., while living with her twin sister in Goshen, Ind.
Before joining the UMKC staff, Sowers worked in the Kansas City area in middle school special education and with adults with mental disabilities.
Sowers hails from Hesston, Kan., where she played basketball and volleyball and ran track. In high school, she was an all-state performer in both volleyball and basketball and was the state champion in the Javelin.
