Breanna Wonderly was announced as Kansas City Softball's pitching coach on Sep. 14, 2021. Wonderly is a former First Team All-Big Ten honoree and came to Kansas City after spending the previous two years as the pitching coach at Austin Peay.
“I’m thrilled to be a part of the Roo Family,” Wonderly said. “Kansas City is home for me, and I’m thankful that Coach Shaw gave me the opportunity to return back to Missouri.”
In Wonderly’s two seasons guiding the Governors’ pitching staff, they notched a 38-28 overall record. During the 2021 season, Austin Peay posted a team ERA of just 3.32 and a WHIP of 1.34, both numbers lower than their opponent averages. Wonderly helped lead Harley Mullins and Kelsey Gross to three OVC Pitcher of the Week recognitions, and guided Jordan Benefiel to OVC Freshman of the Year and All-OVC honors.
Prior to her time at Austin Peay, Wonderly was on staff at Morehead State for the 2019 season.
Wonderly also has experience at the professional level, making 12 appearances for the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch League.
She had a decorated collegiate career, pitching at the University of Illinois after a season at Heartland Community College. During her freshman year at HCC, she was named M-WAC Pitcher of the Year, also receiving All-Conference and All-Region 24 honors. Wonderly then transferred to Illinois, where, during her final two years, the Illini qualified for back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. As a junior, she earned NFCA All-Region Third Team honors and was named Academic All-Big Ten, posting a 2.85 ERA. In her senior year, she helped lead the team to a 39-20 record, earning a win against Marshall in the NCAA Regional. She posted a team-low 2.63 ERA on the season. She threw for 21 wins and garnered NFCA All-Region First Team and All-Big Ten First Team honors.
Originally from Centerview, Mo., Wonderly graduated from Crest Ridge High School after a stellar athletic career. She was a four-time all-conference athlete in softball and basketball, also earning three all-conference nominations in volleyball.
She graduated with her degree in Finance from Illinois in 2017, and earned a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Louisville in 2021.
Wonderly currently resides in Centerview, Mo.
