The Roos closed out Summit League play with a 1-2 effort against South Dakota
The series began on Friday evening, sparked by a lead off inside-the-park home run by Ella Husak. Husak beat the Coyotes' shift, ripping a ball down the right field line and diving in under the tag at home to put the Roos on the board first. USD responded with a run in the second but Husak drove in her second RBI of the day in the bottom of the inning, scoring Mia Corres. The Coyotes took command of the game in the third, plating four runs and leaving KC to attempt a comeback. The Roos added one run on a Monica Franklin sacrifice fly in the fifth to draw within two and laded the bases in the seventh. Franklin tallied her second RBI of the day to score Parker, but the rally came up short and South Dakota emerged with a 5-4 series-opening win.
Following Saturday's senior day festivities, the seniors stole the show in the second game of the series. South Dakota plated a pair of runs in the first, but Delilah Robles shut the Coyotes down for the rest of the game, pitching all seven innings and allowing just two runs. Kansas City responded in the second inning, loading the bases and scoring Noble on a Husak sacrifice fly. Parker came up with a two-out single in the next at-bat, plating Corres to tie the game up. The rest of the game went by with no runs scored until the bottom of the seventh when Mary Cunningham led things off with a walk. Adelyn French grounded into a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning, but Husak and Parker went for back-to-back singles and loaded the bases. A strikeout brought Navarro to the plate with two outs and she wore a pitch on the back for a walk-off hit-by-pitch, giving the Roos a 3-2 win.
Sunday's series finale was kicked off by a South Dakota run in the top of the second, but Kansas City promptly responded in the bottom of the inning. Husak beat the shift again, going to right field for a triple that scored Noble and Leilani Bustamante. Husak later came in to score on a wild pitch and give the Roos a 3-1 lead. The Coyotes chipped away at the lead, scoring one in the third, two in the fourth and one more in the top of the seventh, taking a 5-3 lead into the final half-inning. The Roos attempted to come back, loading the bases with no outs on walks by Husak and Megan Johnston and a single from Parker. KC was unable to take advantage of the situation and South Dakota escaped with the series victory.
Husak and Parker led the charge from the top of the order on the weekend. Parker went 6-of-11 from the plate, scoring one run and driving another in. Husak was 4-of-9 with two runs scored and a team-high five RBI. Robles carried the bulk of the load from the circle, going for 11.0 innings pitched and allowing six runs, while Alyssa Droge went for 7.2 innings and three earned runs and Brooke Seppi went for 2.1 scoreless innings pitched.
The Roos cap off the regular season with a trip to Columbia, Mo. on Tuesday, taking on Missouri before the Summit League Championships from May 6-9.
