The Roos defeated CSUN and Cal Poly on day one of the invite
SAN DIEGO — Kansas City Softball opened the Reggie Smith Invitational with back-to-back wins before finishing the weekend 2-3 against a competitive field at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.
The Roos (8-10) began the tournament in dramatic fashion, earning a 6-5 walk-off victory over CSUN on Friday afternoon. After building a 5-2 lead through two innings, Kansas City answered again in the seventh after the Matadors tied the game in the sixth. Ella Husak ignited the rally and Lauren Parker helped put the winning run in scoring position before Elleana Navarro delivered a single to shallow center to plate Husak and seal the win. The Roos totaled 10 hits in the opener, with Parker and Husak collecting two apiece while Megan Johnston drove in two runs. Alyssa Droge earned the win in relief with four solid innings in the circle.
Kansas City carried that momentum into Friday evening, defeating Cal Poly 4-2 behind a complete-game effort from Delilah Robles. The Roos scored in four different innings and tallied 11 hits, building a 4-0 cushion before holding off a late push. Monica Franklin led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Husak added two hits and Johnston and Kimberly Yepez each recorded RBI. Robles scattered seven hits and struck out five to secure the victory.
The Roos dropped a 10-2 run-rule decision to San Diego State on Saturday afternoon. Kansas City collected eight hits, including an RBI from Lauren Parker and a run-scoring double from Leilani Bustamante, but the Aztecs used a big middle stretch to pull away.
Saturday evening against host San Diego, Kansas City showed resilience despite a 7-3 setback. Johnston went 3-for-4 and Navarro added two hits, including a seventh-inning RBI double as the Roos scored twice late. Defensively, Mia Corres provided one of the weekend's biggest highlights in the third inning, robbing a home run in center field — a play that was later featured as the No. 7 play on SportsCenter's Top 10.
Kansas City closed the weekend in a tightly contested 5-4 loss to Cal Poly on Sunday morning. The Roos plated three runs in the sixth to take a brief lead, highlighted by RBI from Navarro, Corres and Adelyn French. Mary Cunningham added an RBI double earlier in the contest. The Mustangs answered in the bottom half to reclaim the lead in the back-and-forth affair.
For the weekend, Kansas City scored 19 runs on 43 hits. Husak led the way at the plate, hitting .462 (6-for-13) with three runs scored, while Johnston batted .375 with a team-best four RBI. Franklin hit .400 across the five games, and Navarro drove in three runs, including the walk-off winner. In the circle, Robles earned a complete-game victory and logged 11.2 innings, while Droge added a win in relief.
The Roos return to action March 5 for a doubleheader against Northern Colorado.
