Following a conference-best 6k time over the weekend, Mariah Belmont is named Summit League Women's Cross Country Peak Performer of the Week
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Kansas City Cross Country saw the fruit of their labor pay off Tuesday afternoon as Mariah Belmont took home the weekly Summit League Women's Cross Country Peak Performer of the Week award. Belmont becomes the Roos first cross country runner to win the award since Ayabei Cosmas in 2012.Â
The sophomore distance runner ran her first collegiate 6k race Friday afternoon and finished with a time of 21:45.3. The time was good for 49th place and added 33 points to KC's total in a field of 200-plus runners and is the Roos top women's 6k time of the season so far.Â
Belmont was tabbed on the Summit League's Athletes to Watch list heading into her sophomore campaign and first season running for the Roos in cross country. As a freshman, Belmont was one of Kansas City's best distance runners in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.Â
The Macomb, Mich. native excelled with season-best times of 5:19.54 in the mile, 10:23.20 in the 3000-meter dash and 11:18.27 in the 3000-meter steeplechase which was good for eighth place at the Summit League Outdoor Championships last May.Â
Belmont and the Roos head to Ashland, Neb. on October 17 for the Platte River Rumble, their final meet before the Summit League Cross Country Championship in early November.Â
