The Roos used goals from Jeremy Francou and Raphael Kistmann to surge past the Golden Hurricane
TULSA, Okla. - It was a complete team effort from Kansas City Men's Soccer (8-2-4, 3-1-0 Summit) in tonight's 2-0 victory over Tulsa (4-8-2, 3-3-0 AAC), securing a meaningful victory for Head Coach Ryan Pore in his 100th career head coaching appearance.
It took Kevin Nkumu and Joackim Betina roving the wings, blocking shots and making impactful runs.
It took the composure of Wesley Cribb with his back to the net, preventing a goal on Tulsa's best opportunity of the night.
It took the facilitation of Bryce Outman and Mathias Baucher, constantly working their ways to dangerous positions and creating opportunities for the offense.
And of course, it took the clinical finishing abilities of Jeremy Francou and Raphael Kistmann, finding the back of the net as they do so well.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Roos' defense was pestering for the Golden Hurricane throughout, allowing nothing easy and ensuring that it was in the right spots when Tulsa had an opportunity to strike. Marc Popow was called into action for just one save on the night, securing the eighth win and fourth shutout of his freshman campaign. The rookie from Warsaw, Poland has already worked his way into the program record books, moving into eighth in single-season wins and a tie for sixth in single-season shutouts.
A flurried counterattack set up the first goal of the night in the 32nd minute, Francou's seventh of the season. Baucher began the move in the defensive third, intercepting an errant Tulsa pass and pushing the ball up to Francou at midfield. The striker's speed with the ball on his foot allowed him to maintain separation from the defense, finishing with a powerful shot into the side netting. Francou now has four game-winners on the season, moving into a tie for most in the Summit League and third-most in the nation.
Kansas City struck again in the 59th, Outman entering the final third and the Roos with numbers forward. Outman played Betina up the right side, finding him in-stride for a first touch cross into the box. Kistmann was waiting just in front of the penalty spot with Tulsa's Danny Stevens in his way, but he was able to put a left boot to the ball and deflect it off Stevens' thigh and past the keeper. It's the second-straight goal-scoring game for Kistmann, who made his fifth start of the year and made the most of his 44 minutes on the pitch this evening.
With 100 games on the Kansas City sideline, Pore has moved into second place in the Roo record books in games coached. The head man, a 2021 Tulsa Hall of Fame Inductee, has defeated his alma mater in back-to-back seasons. This one goes down as Kansas City's first win in 12 games played on Tulsa's home field.
The Roos remain on the road for their final non-conference game of the season at 1 p.m. on Sunday, traveling to East Lansing, Mich. for a meeting with Michigan State.
