
Kansas City Triumphs Over Oral Roberts in Straight Sets

Season High in Service Aces Propel Roos to First Sweep of the Season
KANSAS CITY- Kansas City Volleyball (4-16, 2-7) blew their way past Oral Roberts (5-16, 2-7) in straight sets (26-24, 25-9, 25-16). The Roos were efficient on the offensive end, notching 26 kills on 95 attacks for a .253 hitting percentage for the match. The Roos dished out 32 assists and recorded a season high 12 service aces. On defense, Kansas City finished with 49 digs, six block assists and three total blocks.Â
Kaia Dunford led the Roos in kills with 13 and totaled an impressive three service aces. Kailee Deffebaugh earned five kills and a block to help the cause. Sydney Henry did all the dirty work for the Roos, finishing with 16 assists and 11 digs on the night.Â
SET BY SET VS. Oral Roberts
- Set One / 26-24: Kansas City earned a set one dub in comeback fashion. Oral Roberts was able to gain the edge over Kansas City thanks to a pair of early attack errors from the Roos. Kansas City followed their early mistakes up with a 12-4 run that elevated them into a five point lead. The Roos' decently sized lead was erased when the Golden Eagles responded with a 15-9 run of their own which forced Kansas City down to set point. The Roos remained resilient, however, proceeding to notch the set's final four points and win set one outright 26-24. Kansas City was aided by a crucial Sila Ozyurek late set kill and Brooke Boyer's two service aces which tied the match and 24 all and then gave the Roos a one point edge.Â
- Set Two / 25-9: Kansas City allowed the first two points of the set from Oral Roberts before a rampant run by the Roos. From going down 0-2 in set two, KC proceeded to get hot on a 25-7 run, showcasing a combination of outstanding offense and stifling defense. The Roos recorded 12 kills, three service aces, two blocks and a .478 hitting percentage in the second set to beat ORU by a season high 16 point margin. Additionally, four Roos recorded multiple kills in the set, with Dunford earning five, Deffebaugh four, Henry two and Whetstone two.Â
- Set Three / 25-16: The Roos and Golden Eagles were deadlocked in a 5-5 tie before Kansas City surged forward with a 8-5 run that made it 12-9 favoring the Roos. At the midway mark of the third set, Coach Posey issued a successful challenge on a net violation call which made it 15-10 Kansas City. From then on, the Roos finished the set on a 10-6 run and ended the match on a Whetstone's fifth kill of the evening. The Roos earned four service aces and 13 kills as a team in the third set to take it 25-16 and the match in straight sets.Â
STATS TO NOTE
- For the first time this season, Kansas City won via a sweep. The Roos had won their three matches this season, all with scores of 3-1 favoring Kansas City.Â
- Kansas City won the second set by a 16 point margin (25-9), making it the highest point margin the Roos have won a set by this season.Â
- Kaia Dunford continued to excel, tallying a team high 13 kills for the match. Dunford extends her streak of 10 or more kills in a match up to 11 this season.Â
- The Roos notched a season high 12 service aces, surpassing their previous season high of 12 against North Dakota. Dunford and Green recorded three service aces apiece. Henry, Buschhorn and Boyer all produced two service aces to add to the team total.Â
