Kansas City Bested by Denver in Four Sets

Sila Ozyurek’s 12 kill performance wasn’t enough to overcome the Pios
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Volleyball (3-15, 1-6) fell short of victory against Denver (9-9, 4-4) in a highly competitive four set duel (23-25, 16-25, 25-22, 18-25). The Roos racked up 82 points, 38 kills and 38 assists off of 108 total attacks for a .241 hitting percentage.Â
Kansas City got a stellar outing from Sila Ozyurek, who led the Roos in kills with 12 for the match and earned a .500 hitting percentage. Kaia Dunford contributed to the team effort with 10 kills on 36 total attacks to go along with four digs. Coco Buschhorn added five service aces, a career high, and four digs to the Roos tally.Â
SET-BY-SET VS. DenverÂ
- Set One / 23-25: The Roos started out in a 7-4 deficit before Sydney Henry earned some momentum back in Kansas City's favor with her first kill of the match. From there, the Roos kept the set close and got within a point of Denver when Ozyurek snapped the ball over the net for a vicious kill of her own. For the remainder of the set, the Pios kept the Roos at bay and earned a two point first set victory.Â
- Set Two / 16-25: Kansas City took an early 4-3 advantage when Kaia Dunford knocked the ball over the net for one of her 10 kills in the match. Following that point, Denver went on a 10-4 point run to find their way into a 13-7 set two lead. The Roos couldn't find their way out of the hole and fell to Denver in set two to go down 0-2 in the match.Â
- Set Three / 25-22: Denver controlled the opening stages of set three, getting out to an early 10-6 advantage before the Roos big run. From that point on, Kansas City and Denver went back and forth for the remainder of the set. The Roos tied the score at 13-13 when Buschhorn nabbed one of her five service aces in the contest. Kansas City took the lead when Dunford recorded her lone service ace to put the Roos up 15-14. KC finished the set on an 11-8 point run with five different players earning kills in that stretch.Â
- Set Four / 18-25: Kansas City battled Denver close in set four as Ozyurek registered three kills in a row to keep the score within a point at 6-5 favoring Denver. The Pios then went on a 9-3 run to keep the Roos out of distance. Kansas City was unable to take care of the Pios in set four and dropped the match to Denver.Â
STATS TO NOTE
- Coco Buschhorn led the charge for the Roos with a career high five service aces in the contest and surpassing her prior career of one service ace against Oral Roberts. Buschhorn's five ace performance is the most aces by a Roo in a single game this season, passing Leah Green's mark of four against North Dakota.Â
- Sila Ozyurek led the Roos in kills with 12, nearly tying her career high of 13 kills set against Howard and UT Martin.Â
- Kaia Dunford was the Roos only other player with double digit kills, registering 10 in the contest. This is Dunford's ninth game in a row with 10 kills or more.Â
