South Dakota Outlasts Kansas City in Four-Set Contest

Double-doubles from Dunford and Henry highlight Kansas City’s strong effort
VERMILLION, SD-Kansas City battled through a tough match against South Dakota but ultimately fell in four sets (17-25, 20-25, 25-21, 11-25). Kaia Dunford was the offensive leader for the Roos, finishing with 11 kills and 11 digs for a double-double performance. Sydney Henry also put up a double-double, contributing 15 assists and 17 digs, while Kailee Deffebaugh made a strong impact at the net with 6 block assists and a hitting percentage of .263.

SET ONE / 17-25: Kansas City struggled to find momentum early in the first set as South Dakota took control with a 6-1 run to start. Despite a few strong kills from Kaia Dunford and Kailee Deffebaugh, the Roos couldn't close the gap, trailing 10-19 midway through the set. A brief surge brought Kansas City within striking distance at 16-23, but South Dakota quickly regained control, closing out the set 25-17 with a final kill, putting the Roos on the back foot heading into the next set.
SET TWO / 20-25: Kansas City kept the set close in the early going, battling South Dakota point-for-point to a 9-9 tie. The Roos remained competitive throughout, with key kills from Dunford and Sydney Henry helping to stay within reach at 14-19. A late surge brought Kansas City within striking distance at 20-23, but South Dakota responded with timely kills and took advantage of a Roos error to secure the set 25-20.
