KC Take Its First League Loss After 4-0 Start
DENVER, Colo. - Kansas City Volleyball fought evenly in each set but ultimately lost the fifth set to Denver this afternoon, resulting in a 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12) defeat. Kaia Dunford was instrumental in leading Kansas City's offense, contributing 15 kills while maintaining a hitting percentage of 0.233.
SET-BY-SET VS. Denver
SET ONE / 25 - 21 | Sila Ozyurek earned the initial point for the Roos, but DU responded with four consecutive points to maintain their advantage. However, the Roos regained momentum when Caroline Keithley secured two service aces, evening the score at 17-17. Dunford then took charge, propelling the Roos to their first lead of the set and ultimately securing set one with a decisive kill.
SET TWO / 12 - 25 | From the outset, The Roos and The Pioneers were locked in a closely contested battle, with the score tied at 7-7. Denver surged ahead of the Roos by limiting KC to only 12 points in the set, resulting in the Pioneers claiming set two.
SET THREE / 25 - 22 | Henry seized control of the match with a swift kill in response to Denver's four-point lead. She promptly turned the game around by passing the ball to Gillen, leveling the score at 4-4. The Pioneers reacted swiftly, but Gillen fought back tenaciously. Denver and Kansas City engaged in another point-for-point battle. Henry provided excellent balls to Whetstone and Ozyurek before delivering a service ace, prompting Denver to call a timeout. After the timeout, Whetstone stepped up to deliver a crucial play, and the Roos secured set three.
SET FOUR / 21 - 25 | The Pioneers stormed ahead of the Roos 2-6 before Warren and Dunford halted their momentum. Henry delivered a service ace that leveled the set at 9-9. Denver and Kansas City continued their closely contested battle during the set. However, the Pioneers capitalized on KC's mistakes, ultimately securing the set victory for Denver forcing a set five.
SET FIVE / 12 - 15 | Dunford delivered the opening kill, but Denver capitalized on the Roos' energy and swiftly built a four-point lead, making it 4-3 in their favor. Dunford then took charge, becoming the catalyst for a six-point run that forced Denver to call a timeout. Warren managed to score a kill, followed by Dunford's service ace. Unfortunately, it wasn't sufficient as the Pioneers managed to overpower the Roos' defense, Denver claiming the match victory.
