A back-and-forth battle was decided in the final set by KC's efficient attack
KANSAS CITY – Kansas City Volleyball (15-4, 6-1) took down South Dakota in a tight matchup this afternoon in five sets (25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13). Odyssey Warren led the team offensively with 21 kills, and Sydney Henry added 55 assists as the Roos completed the season sweep on the Coyotes.
SET-BY-SET
- Set 1 / 25-22 | The Roos started off hot on an 8-3 run thanks to three Odyssey Warren kills that forced South Dakota to use a timeout early on. The Coyotes would fight back after the timeout and cut the deficit to just one, but kills from Carly Gillen and Kaia Dunford would keep the Roos ahead. South Dakota would fight back to tie it at 22 a piece, but the Roos would win the next three points to take the first set.
- Set 2 / 18-25 | The second set started off with the two sides going back-and-forth, but a quick South Dakota 4-0 run would cause Kansas City to use a timeout. The Roos would rally back after the timeout with a 6-2 run, capped off by a kill from Dunford to cut the deficit to just one, but the Coyotes would respond with a run of their own to preserve the lead. South Dakota would dominate the rest of the way, taking the second set to even the match.
- Set 3 / 25-21 | South Dakota would pick up where they left off in the second set with a quick 5-1 run to begin, however the Roos would respond by winning six of the next eight points to tie the game. Neither side would create much separation from there, but the Roos took their first lead of the set at 16-15 as Dunford and Warren continued to rack up the kills. Kansas City wouldn't look back from there, going on a 6-0 run to get them to set point before Dunford put it away with a kill.
- Set 4 / 22-25 | Just like the previous set, South Dakota got off to a sizzling start, this time beginning the set on a 6-1 run. The Coyotes stayed in control this time, extending the lead to as much as eight. Kansas City fought back to cut the deficit to as little as two after a Warren kill, but South Dakota would hang on to force a fifth set.
- Set 5 / 15-13 | The Roos got off to a narrow lead early thanks to a South Dakota service error and a Warren kill, but South Dakota would take all the momentum as they took a 9-6 lead. The Roos would come storming back, winning the next three points thanks to kills from Sila Ozyurek and Kimora Whetstone to even the set. Ozyurek would throw down an emphatic kill to get the Roos to match point, and a South Dakota service ace sealed the deal as the Roos won the fifth and final set.
