Madison Page scored her fifth goal of the season, but the Roos fell just short against SDSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State remained one of the three unbeaten teams in the Division I ranks, but had to withstand a Kansas City rally for a 2-1 victory Sunday at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits, 11-0-5 overall and 5-0-2 in the Summit League, stayed unbeaten at home for the 42nd consecutive match, while the Roos fell to 1-4-2 in the conference and 2-10-4 overall.
Neither team could mount much of an offensive attack in the opening 25 minutes as temperatures in the low 40s and a 17-mph wind out of the North, Northwest, played a factor. Kansas City had its first shot on goal at the 21-minute mark as Kayda Kamolz fired from 15' out and it took SDSU another six minutes before registering its first shot on net.
SDSU's Maya Hansen opened the scoring at the 29-minute mark with a shot on top of the 18' box to give the home team a 1-0 lead. It was Hansen's team-leading 9th goal of the season and the 37th of her career. The lead was extended to 2-0 at the 79' mark when Laney Murzdek took a pass from Karlee Manding and stuffed the ball in the net.
Madison Page gave the Roos some life when she dribbled down the left side of the SDSU end of the field and around at Jackrabbit defender and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper for the Roos' lone goal of the game with six minutes remaining. The Roos made it interesting with less than a minute to play when a corner kick advanced into the SDSU goalmouth, but an offensive player could not put a foot on the loose ball. Kansas City goalie Mackenzie Caldwell kept the Roos in the game with two point-blank saves at the 51-minute mark.
KEY MOMENTS
- 16' / 0-0 | The Limongi sisters did battle for the first time in the match to the left of the Kansas City goal – Sophia of the Roos foiled an attack from sister Cece from SDSU and kicked it out of bounds.
- 29' / 0-1 | SDSU takes a 1-0 lead when leading scorer Maya Hanson dribbled past two Kansas City defenders on top of the 18' box and drilled a goal into the top lefthand corner of the net.
- 44' / 0-1 | Sophia Smith went down with an apparent left leg injury with 13 seconds left in the first half and SDSU went on to lead 1-0. The Roos could not take advantage of a 17-mph wind at their backs in the first half and SDSU had 4 of its 5 shots in the final 12 minutes.
- 79' / 0-2 | Laney Murzdek scored on point-blank range in the bottom left corner of the net to give SDSU a 2-0 lead. Murzdek, who scored the only goal of the game in the win over Oral Roberts on Friday, was assisted by Karlee Manding.
- 84' / 1-2 | Kansas City cut the lead in half when Madison Page dribbled around a SDSU defender and chipped the ball over the goal into the upper right corner. It was Page's team-leading fifth goal of the season and it brought life into the Roos.
- 89' / 1-2 | Kansas City had one last opportunity when a corner kick was served into the box, but no Roo player could control the bouncing ball and get a shot off.
STATS TO NOTE
- Kansas City had been shut out the last three games by SDSU until Madison Page brough the scoring drought at the 84' mark.
- The Roos have now lost five straight to SDSU.
- Kansas City entered the game with a two-game unbeaten streak after a tie with North Dakota and win over South Dakota on this road swing on Friday night.
- Madison Page scored her 5th goal this season, tied for fourth in the Summit League.
COACH JESSICA SMITH, QUOTED
"I thought we defended well today and limited a really dynamic attacking group to 11 shots on goal. In the second half, we moved the ball better and we much more dangerous than the first. MJ scored a fantastic goal and we had another chance to equalize with 1 minute left. The fact that we kept creating is a credit to the determination and resilience of our group."
