Fargo, N.D. – Kansas City (29-24) took down the top-seeded South Dakota State Jackrabbits (38-6) to advance to The Summit League Softball Championship semi-finals. A three-run homerun by Kloe Hilbrenner in the top of the seventh proved to be crucial in the Roos' 4-2 victory.
Kansas City had the lone run on the board until the seventh inning. The Roos used a pair of hits in the second inning to carry the 1-0 lead through most of the game. Faith Willis recorded the first hit for the Roos then Lia Lombardini reached on a fielder's choice. Sydney McQuinn followed with a walk to move Lombardini into scoring position and Alexis D'Ambrosio hit a chopper up the middle to get KC on the board.
"I had confidence in her, just like Michael Jordan if you just let her keep shooting, she will make something happen," Head Coach Kerry Shaw said. "I didn't want to bunt with her, she's too much of a threat and obviously what Kloe did was a bonus."
The Roos faced both ace pitchers from the Jackrabbit's bullpen and managed to put up seven hits. One of those hits came in a pinch-hit opportunity for Maggie Klover who led off the seventh. Katherine Karnatz followed with a sac bunt, but the speed of Klover earned herself a spot on second base when SDSU went for the lead runner. Then came Hilbrenner's three-run smash to extend the Roos' lead to 4-0 headed into the final frame.
"Hats off to Mia, she threw incredible," Shaw said. "That's a tough offense to hold down."
The Jackrabbit's didn't go down without a fight, hitting two solo homeruns in the bottom of the seventh. Mia Hoveland and D'Ambrosio continued to grind and connected on great pitch calls to strikeout two SDSU hitters and force a ground out to end the game. Hoveland recorded five strikeouts in the complete seven-inning game against one of the best offenses in the country.
Kansas City continued to record diving plays, stolen bases and sound defense in the errorless finish. The Roos will return to Tharaldson Park in Fargo, North Dakota tomorrow, Friday, May 14 at 1 p.m. against the winner of #2 Omaha and #6 North Dakota game.
