Gutiérrez Martínez's Brace Leads Roos Over EIU

An early attacking onslaught by Kansas City gave them all the advantage they needed
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Hugo Gutierrez Martínez continued his hot start to the season, scoring his second and third goals of the year in Kansas City's 3-1 victory over Eastern Illinois this afternoon. Kevin Komodi also found the back of the net, his first goal of the season and the third of his career.
Kansas City's attacking flair showed early, as the Roos put up four shots in the first 10 minutes, placing three of them on frame. In the 10th minute, Ryan Khedoo snuck past the EIU back line and attempted a shot that was saved by the Panthers' keeper, but Komodi was there to collect the rebound and send the ball into the open net.
Following EIU's kickoff, the Roos quickly regained possession and continued pushing the ball forward. In the 12th minute, Khedoo was in on the action once again, sending a ball to Jony Munoz in the box. Muñoz then pushed a back-heel pass between the legs of a defender to Gutiérrez Martínez, who shook off two opponents and snuck one by the Panthers' keeper to make the advantage 2-0 in favor of Kansas City.
Eastern Illinois scored in the 21st minute to cut the lead to one, and the pace of the game slowed substantially. The score remained at 2-1 for the remainder of the half and well into the second half.
In the 84th minute, with the Roos moving forward, Gutiérrez Martínez took a ball outside of the box, put a pair of touches on it to evade a defender, and whipped a shot around the outstretched arms of the Panthers' keeper for his second goal of the day. The goal proved to be all of the insurance that the Roos needed.
Cooper Clark earned his second decision in goal of the year, allowing one goal and making three saves.
The Roos had their biggest offensive output of the season thus far, attempting 17 shots and placing 12 of them on frame. Muñoz led with four shots, followed by Gutiérrez Martínez and Khedoo with three each. Komodi and Albert Porqueras Adame each took a pair of shots as well.
Kansas City (2-3) will play the second game in their series against Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 1 pm.
