Kansas City Sweeps Drake in their First Home Series

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Softball (7-1) completed the sweep of Drake University (2-6) in their first home three-game series of the season. This is Kansas City's best start in over a decade. In the hot start, the Roos have more wins under their belt this season than the entire shortened 2020 season.
"It was fantastic to sweep an opponent, especially an opponent as good as Drake has been historically," Head Coach Kerry Shaw said.
The Drake Bulldogs came into the game with a vengeance and ready to attack. The first pitch of the game was driven over the centerfield fence by the Drake leadoff hitter. Camryn Stickel gathered herself and guided the Roos' defense to five scoreless innings for their opponents after that.
"A lot of people would have buckled," Shaw explained. "It is mental toughness, she is a freshman (Camryn Stickel) with ice water in her veins, she doesn't let much shake her."
The Roos were quiet until the bottom of the third when the momentum started to build as Faith Willis drew a lead-off walk, Katherine Karnatz drilled one through the shortstop's legs, and Kloe Hilbrenner drove in a run with a single up the middle. Delainey Fenoglio stepped up next and smashed one over the left field fence and onto the roof of the community center next door. The big inning continued when Faith Denning drew a walk and Maggie Klover slapped one through the five-six hole for a single. Abby Sciara grabbed two RBIs of her own as she doubled to left field and extended the Kansas City lead to 6-1 at the end of the third.
"Fenoglio has such great hand-eye coordination," Shaw said. "After a slow start to the weekend, we told her that we want you to go out there and pull-off one of your best swings."
Sciara continued her hot streak scoring Klover in the bottom of the fifth. That would prove to be the final run of the game for the Roos, but the Bulldogs put together a top-of-the-seventh rally to give Kansas City fans a scare. After two scored in the seventh, the Roos made a pitching change and Mia Hoveland came in to grab her first save of the season.
The Roos look to continue their win streak as they travel to in the Red Raider Invite in Lubbock, Texas next weekend. Kansas City is scheduled to open the tournament with a matchup against Abilene Christian on Saturday, March 6th at 11 a.m. Follow @KCRoosSB on Twitter and visit KCRoos.com for updates, news, and highlights.
