Brookings, S.D. – Kansas City (10-10, 7-7) went on the road to face #22 South Dakota State (20-2, 13-0). The expected tough matchup gave the Roos a battle in the paint that ended in a final score of 53-73.
The most efficient quarter for both teams came in the first frame. It was hard to hold down an 84.6 FG% shooting by the Jackrabbits but the Roos spread out the scoring to stay within reach. Five Roos made it into the scoring column in the first period, led by Naomie Alnatas with five. Kansas City gained momentum going into halftime when Mandy Willems came off the bench and scored half of the Roos' second-quarter points.
A strong defensive third quarter by the Roos held the Jackrabbits without a field goal in the final six minutes and only 13 total points in the quarter. Free chances at the charity stripe proved to be the difference maker in the second half. SDSU had 28 to the Roos' eight free throw attempts. The twenty points gained by the opposition at the line in the second half was a feat Kansas City couldn't overcome.
RaVon Nero and Willems led the Roos offensively with 11 points each with Nero dishing out five assists. Alnatas was next ending with eight points and six rebounds. Taylor Larson and Paige Bradford both added seven. A few fresh faces to the KC lineup made their presence known as freshman Jocelyn Ewell added four and freshman Machia Mullens added three.
Kansas City fights to hold on to the four seed in The Summit League conference tournament tomorrow in their final regular season game. The Roos will get a rematch against the Jackrabbits tomorrow at 5 p.m. in Frost Arena.
