Lombardini and Karnatz end the game early with three RBIs apiece in the fifth inning
Rosemont, Ill. – Kansas City Softball (4-1) looked wide awake for their 9 a.m. first pitch against Valparaiso (1-3) this morning after a long weekend of softball in the The Dome of DePaul. The Roos travel back to KC with a hot start to their 2021 season. Taking advantage of every opportunity to play they get, the Roos busted out the bats early to sweep Valpo in their back-to-back series. Game five of the DePaul Dome Tournament ended in five innings after the Roos put Valpo away with a final score of 10-2.
The second game started a little like the first, Valpo started hot with two runs in the top of the first that came off a four-base error that dropped over the outfield fence off the glove of Kansas City. Valpo was held scoreless the rest of the game at the hand of Mia Hoveland and the Roos' defense.
"Once again our pitcher shook off a tough break in the first inning," Head Coach Kerry Shaw said. "Mia Hoveland cruised the rest of the game with an incredible performance for her third complete game in three days."
The offense of the Roos forced three pitching changes in the circle for Valpo. Lead-off hitter Katherine Karnatz continued her hot weekend at the plate by singling to right field in her first at-bat of the game. The score was even at 2-2 by the end of the first inning. A double by Alexis D'Ambrosio resulted in a runner on second and third for the Roos who later both scored on a wild pitch and throwing error by the catcher.
Kansas City added two hits and one run each in the third and fourth inning but exploded for five hits and six runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early. Lia Lombardini started the party in the fifth with a three-run bomb over the right field fence. She finished the day two-for-three at the plate. Karnatz finished the game with a three-run triple down the right field line that gave Kansas City the run rule. Karnatz finished with three hits and four RBIs on the day. Senior Faith Willis also accounted for three runs, scoring two and driving in another.
"Defensively we were solid and offensively we were locked in," Shaw noted.
The Roos are scheduled to be back in action at the Red Raider Invite March 6th and 7th in Lubbock, Texas. Visit KCRoos.com for schedule updates, news, and highlights.
