KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Using a balanced scoring attack, Kansas City Women's Basketball (9-8, 6-5) defeated Omaha (2-11, 1-7), 76-66 and earned its first sweep of Summit League play.
"We've been talking about trusting the process," Head Coach Jacie Hoyt said. "We know that now is the time that we want to be playing our best basketball and that if we continued to trust and work hard we would be rewarded with a game like today. I'm so proud of this group because they don't have any quit in them."
After connecting on a record 16 threes yesterday afternoon, the Roos' hot shooting continued into the first quarter today. Kansas City knocked down five triples in the first 10 minutes, led by Paige Bradford, who had two.
The Roos hit 12 three-point shots today, but Omaha had 11 of its own. The difference in the game was made in the paint, where KC outscored the Mavs, 22-14.
"I thought we did a better job of attacking their zone and not just settling," Hoyt said. "We had more cutting action. We knew that we probably weren't going to make as many threes as yesterday, and 12 threes is still a lot, but I thought we did a better job of penetrating."
Against a zone-heavy team like the Mavericks, ball movement was needed in order for the Roos to be successful. Kansas City notched 17 assists on 24 made field goals, led by Taylor Larson with five.
"We knew we had to move the ball," Hoyt said. "I thought we did a good job of getting everybody touches and finding the open man."
Four Roos finished in double digits in the scoring column, led by RaVon Nero and Mandy Willems with 16 each. Jada Mickens and Naomie Alnatas were not far behind, both netting 15 points. Overall, the Roos shot 50% from the field on the day, their fourth time reaching that mark this season.
"We have had so many tough breaks come our way," Hoyt said. "Once we can get everybody together and really get gelled I think that we're a tough team to play against because we have so many weapons on the floor."
With the win, Kansas City moves into fourth place in Summit League play. The Roos will host Denver next weekend on Feb. 19 and 20. Those games will be streamed live on the Roo Sports Network.
