When people talk about Division I college athletics in the metro area, the University of Missouri-Kansas City rarely enters the conversation. Brandon Martin vows to change that.
Martin joined UMKC as athletic director in December 2018 and immediately made his presence felt throughout the athletic department, the school and the community. Since he started, athletic department revenue has leapt 1,516%. He pushed to move basketball games from Municipal Auditorium back to the Swinney Center on campus and to spend $1.1 million renovating its lobby and $600,000 on a new court, new graphics and a new video board. He finalized the $700,000 replacement of Durwood Soccer Stadium's playing surface field, giving it state-of-the-art field turf.
And Martin's nowhere near finished. His goal is to put UMKC on the map — locally and nationally — and he's convinced that it's possible with enough support from the community.
The Kansas City Business Journal recently sat down with Martin to learn more about his experience and vision for UMKC.
