KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City student-athletes posted a cumulative 3.40 grade point average (GPA) during the spring 2020 semester to set a new athletics department record, and all 16 teams posted a 3.0-or-higher GPA.
"I am elated by the stellar academic achievement of our student-athletes this semester," said Director of Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin. "We continue to be at the vanguard of academic excellence at the conference level and nationally. This is a victory not only for Athletics, but for the UMKC campus community."
Ninety-three Kansas City student-athletes earned the status of scholar-athlete, earning a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher after fall 2019. Additionally, 36 student-athletes also recorded a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the spring semester.
"I am proud that our student-athletes continue to place academics at the center of their experience with Kansas City Athletics," Deputy Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator Ursula Gurney said. "Our academics staff and coaches value both academics and athletics, and work hard to best assist our student-athletes to be successful in many aspects of their lives, consistently working towards comprehensive excellence."
Additionally, Kansas City Athletics earned a cumulative 985 in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR), scoring two points higher than the NCAA national average of 983. Furthermore, the department's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) is above the national average at 92%.
"I want to send a special thanks to our coaches and academic support staff for their contribution in encouraging our student-athletes toward academic excellence," commented Dr. Martin. "It has definitely taken a 'village' of support to make this happen."
Combined with a record-high department GPA, Kansas City Athletics continues to excel and win within the classroom.
