LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas City softball (6-13) wrapped up the final day of the Rock Chalk Challenge in style with an 8-7 win over Drake. The Roos picked up their first win on the weekend (1-4) and the bats had a lot to do with it.
Â
Sophomore catcher Alexis D'Ambrosio was hot at the plate, going 2-4 with a game high four RBI's. Another hot bat for the Roos came from the senior leader Chyanne Onstad, who totaled two timely hits today and finished the weekend hitting .385. Sophomore pitcher Kailyn Packard went the distance and picked up her fifth win on the year (5-9).
Â
Coming into this game, the Roos struggled to hit its stride in the box. They broke out this game, totaling six hits and eight runs. The hitters saw the ball well also, totaling eight walks.
Â
Senior Sydney Garcia got the run party started early for Kansas City in the first inning, with a deep shot over the fence for her first home run of the tournament and her second on the year.
Â
The Roos had to respond to the Bulldog's innings several times, as Drake scored a run in every inning through the first five.
Â
The third inning, the Roos found themselves down 2-1 for the first time in the game. They responded in a big way, racking up four runs in the top. The freshman Maggie Klover started the big inning with a single to left field. Onstad also singled to left, bringing up D'Ambrosio with two outs. She produced, lacing one through the middle for her first two RBI's of the tournament. A couple of Bulldog errors allowed the Roos two more runs and a 5-2 lead.
Â
Kansas City got another run in the fourth, courtesy of an RBI groundout from Fenoglio that scored Garcia. However, Drake scored two runs in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
Â
In the top of the seventh inning, the Roos needed a run to stay in the game. After Garcia walked, Onstad hit a timely double down the left field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. The hero in the third inning, D'Ambrosio produced once again, lacing another ball up the middle like her previous at-bat for two RBI's and the eventual game winner.
Packard shined in the final two innings, not allowing a whole lot of traffic on the bases and holding the bulldogs scoreless.
