RIO VERDE, Ariz. – In the spring opener, Kansas City Women's Golf tied for 16th as a team at the Rio Verde Invitational at the 72-par, 6,242-yard White Wing Golf Course. The Roos went into the clubhouse carding a 314-318-318/950. The event began Friday and turned into a two-day affair, squeezing in 36 holes today after rain washed out Saturday action.
"This was a tough week for our team as we faced some adversity and we are all disappointed with how we finished," said head coach Brianna Portmann. "We struggled to handle the conditions of the golf course and must continue to improve on that weakness. However, there were some highlights this week that will help this team as we move forward through our spring season. We accomplished a couple team goals and will expect to do this more consistently as we compete week after week."
Kenni Henson had two rounds of sub-80 golf to finish first on the team. Overall, she tied for 50th individually claiming a 75-82-78/235 for a 19-over par. Her first-round score of 75 was the team low throughout the Invite.
Coming in second on the team and tied for 54th overall was Jaime Bellingham. After a first-round 80 score, she shaved off three strokes in the second round to bounce back. She finished with an 80-77-79/236 for a 20-over par.
Megan Lucas, who collected eight birdies overall, finished third on the team with an 80-77-80/237 (+21).
Hayley Jones, who was fourth on the team with a 79-82-81/242 (+26), was one of four overall players to post an eagle. Hers happened in round one on Friday at the par-five, 485-yard, hole No. 12. She was a stand-out on par three holes, tying for the third-best average among all players.
The Roos excelled on the par-three holes, ranking second among all the teams with a 3.20 par-three average. They were only behind team champion Arkansas State on par-three's.
Arkansas State won the team championship with a 299-289-292/880 (+16).
