Tom Kruse Picked up Point over Wichita State; Yana Grechkina Aided in Win over Bradley
DENVER - After a week of solid play, Kansas City Tennis swept the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) singles player of the week awards for the week of Feb. 3-9. Tom Kruse won the award on the men's side, while Yana Grechkina was honored for the women.
"I'm super excited that these guys got the recognition they deserve on some hard-fought wins," Head Coach Kendell Hale said.
Kruse wins the award after battling for a three-set victory (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) at the two spot over Wichita State's Orel Ovil last Tuesday in the Roos' 5-1 loss. It was Kruse's first win of the season after falling to Nebraska's Patrick Cacciatore in three sets in the season-opener.
"Tom lost a tough three-setter to Nebraska a week before and learned from that match to help him secure a three-set win against a tough opponent from Wichita," Hale said.
Grechkina, after sitting in the Roos' Feb. 1 match against Oklahoma due to a shoulder injury, was vital in the women's first win of the season over Bradley on Saturday. She played at the number two spot against the Braves' Bozana Lojpur, bouncing back after a rough first set to win, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
"Yana is still suffering from an injury, and to win this match was a true test of her toughness, physically and mentally. It is well deserved," Hale said.
The men travel to Creighton this weekend to take on the Bluejays in Omaha on Saturday at 3 PM, while the women remain in town for a home contest against Omaha on Saturday at 2 PM.
