Allick leads the way with a combined 44 points, 21 rebounds on the day
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - In the first doubleheader in program history, the Kansas City Men's Basketball (4-4) team came away with a pair of victories over Kansas Christian. The Roos defeated the Falcons 98-42 in game one, led by 24 points from Josiah Allick and a double-double by Jacob Johnson. Kansas City came away with a 95-36 victory in game two, led by a 20 point, 13 rebound Allick double-double.
"We are very appreciative of Kansas Christian; their administration, their coaches and their kids for following our COVID protocols, taking care of that this week and being willing to play two games in one day," Head Coach Billy Donlon said. "I thought it was important for our guys, and the way it worked out a lot of young guys played a lot of minutes and got a lot of opportunities. Overall, I was really pretty pleased with the day. We did our job."
Kansas City came prepared for the first game of the day, jumping out to a 28-10 led in the first ten minutes. The Roos closed out the half on 75.9% field goal shooting, led by 7-of-8 shooting by Allick. KC's defense stifled the Falcons, holding them to just 24% shooting from the field and only allowing six Falcon rebounds.
The Roos' bench got to show off in the second half, with D'Anthony Pennington and Brayden Mitchell making their first collegiate appearances. Pennington proved his scoring ability, finishing with 11 points and four rebounds. Mitchell was the final Roo to reach the scoring column, finishing with two points.Â
"One of the best parts of the game, besides winning, is seeing some of the young guys get playing time," Allick said. "Whenever they get a bucket, the bench comes alive."
Every Roo that saw the court scored in the first game, with five finishing in double digits. Allick led with 24, followed by Johnson's 18. Johnson also pulled down 12 boards for his first-ever double-double. Caden Boser finished with 12 points, Franck Kamgain added a season-high-tying 11 points and Pennington came in with 11.
Sam Martin also impressed in his first-career start, dishing out 11 assists. The redshirt freshman bested his previous high of seven assists, reached against Greenville earlier this year. He posted the first double-digit assist effort by a Roo since Jahshire Hardnett finished with 10 against Bacone College on Nov. 18 of last season and tied the fourth-most single-game assists in program history.
In the second game of the day, the Roos knocked down their first five field goal attempts of the day, jumping out to a 15-0 lead in the first five minutes and never looking back. The Roos forced the Falcons into 13 first half turnovers and scored 30 points in the paint in the first frame.
The Roos were hot from beyond the three-point line, finishing 11-of-24 from beyond the arc. Franck Kamgain continued his sharp-shooting, knocking down 3-of-4 triples.
Five Roos finished in double digits in the second game as well, led by Allick's 20. Pennington proved the first game was no fluke, dropping in 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Kamgain and Kaimen Lennox added 14 apiece, and Johnson provided an even 10.
"We thought D'Anthony was much better in game two," Donlon said. "We really challenged him and he took it on."
The Roos improve to an even 4-4 on the season, with a matchup against undefeated Saint Louis looming on Wednesday. The game will be broadcasted on Fox Sports Midwest at 7 p.m.
