KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Men's Basketball (1-0, 0-0) team opened up the season with an emphatic 105-35 win over Culver-Stockton (0-2, 0-2) on Wednesday afternoon.
"I was happy with our effort, I didn't think it ever wavered," Head Coach Billy Donlon said. "There are some things we have to clean up, but it was great to just be playing basketball again."
Josiah Allick opened scoring with a lay-in just 17 seconds into the game, and the Roos never looked back. Kansas City opened up the game on a 17-3 run, holding the Wildcats to zero field goals in the first seven minutes of play.
Familiar faces led the Roos through the first half. Allick finished with 21 points and six boards, Marvin Nesbitt Jr. added 15 points on six-of-six shooting, Franck Kamgain contributed 10 points of his own while Zion Williams put up nine points and five assists.Â
After the first media timeout in the second half, it was entirely fresh faces for the Roos. Jacob Johnson got his first-career start after redshirting last season, finishing with 18 points and five dimes.
"We felt good about Jacob all through last year when he redshirted," Donlon said. "He worked hard and that paid off today."
Kaimen Lennox and Tyre Boykin, both true freshmen, each logged over 20 minutes of playing time and dropped eight points apiece. Paxton Payne and Devon House also logged their first minutes in the Roos uniform, posting seven and nine points, respectively.
Kansas City took care of the ball throughout the game, finishing with just five turnovers on the night. On the other side of the ball, they were able to force the Wildcats into 24 turnovers, converting them into 35 points.
"To only have five turnovers, we did a good job," Donlon said. "You expect a few more mistakes from not having competed with everything going on. There were a lot of positives to point at."
The Roos will take the holiday off tomorrow and be back in action on Friday in the first-ever Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Tipoff Classic. Kansas City will take on Greenville on Friday at 4 p.m., then will turn right back around and play against Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
