Throughout the months of November and December, Kansas City student-athletes engaged in the annual Student-Athlete Leadership Cabinet's (SALC) Toy Drive, collecting toy and monetary donations to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kansas City. Teams looked to friends, family and fans to help this cause and successfully raised a record amount of donations through collections at games, bake sales, and fan clinics.
The SALC Holiday Toy Drive is part of a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) SAAC initiative to promote community engagement throughout the school year. All WAC member schools are charged with implementing community outreach programs between November and February for a conference-wide challenge, with WAC SAAC representatives voting on the most successful outreach program for the "WAC SAAC Community Service Award".Â
For the past two years, Kansas City Athletics has won the WAC SAAC Community Service Award for the Toy Drive's efforts and success. Â This year, student-athletes raised over $2,000 in toys and monetary donations.
Brandon McKissic, junior on the men's basketball team and Student-Athlete Athletic Director, noted that "I am happy for the success we had and the smiles we put on the kids' faces. I look forward to doing it again next year."
Marcus Johnson, a fifth-year senior on the track & field/cross country teams and Student-Athlete AD for Internal Relations said, "The toy drive is our chance to give back to the Kansas City community. We raised a decent amount of money to give to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kansas City, which some of the kids may not have had toys for the holidays. Seeing their enjoyment and smiles makes it worthwhile."
Once all of the toys and cash donations were collected, SALC representatives took a shopping trip to their local Target store to buy toys, movies and books. After the toys were purchased, a group of student-athletes delivered the toys to the students at the local Boys and Girls Club.
Assistant Director of Academic Support, Amelia Howard, serves as the SALC Advisor. Howard stated, "I was so proud of our student-athletes and their efforts during the Toy Drive this year. Service is a key value of our athletic department, and our student-athletes demonstrate that core value on a daily basis. Their passion for giving back to the Kansas City community is commendable."
